bio
Born in 1998, Siara Marshall is a Hispanic, San Antonio-based multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, and structural design technician. She studied Fine Art at the University of Texas at San Antonio with a specialization in New Media and has worked in the structural/ architectural field for nearly a decade. After briefly studying structural engineering, she left and went back for her BFA after the 2020 COVID pandemic. Siara has participated in notable programs like “COLFA Research Conference and Showcase” and “Contemporary Art Month” with a performance at Ruby City. She has also developed her practice through a mentorship under local artist, composer, and the San Antonio River Foundation’s Director of Art Programs, Pamela Martinez-- performing soundbaths at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and Confluence Park.
The general themes Siara has worked from are memory, time, urbanization, and the social effects of cultural assimilation. Her work examines place and slowness as a form of resistance to the structurally imposed fast-paced lifestyle that one must endure today. Both digital media and physical materials are incorporated into her work, preferring to explore the senses and memory through sound, imagery, and texture. Archiving her experiences is a big part of her process with practices like journaling, photography, video, scanning, or field recording. Current events, music, the meticulously built environment, and the awkward mundane often motivate her to create or act on a creative flow. Taking note of both passive and intense experiences and turning them into something different from what they were feels like a way to process life and memory.
